Hi, it's Matt again with NorthStar Credit Union. Today we're talking about debit card safety card fraud as an ever-growing concern worldwide. Your best defense is to take precautions to protect yourself while doing transactions. As part of NorthStar's ongoing commitment to safeguarding our members, we have put together some helpful suggestions to reduce your risk.

Step 1: Enroll your debit card for purchase alerts.

This helps keep your account secure. You will receive alerts for transactions in real-time and immediately identify potential fraudulent activity that could be occurring on your card. You are now able to take an active role in your finances to track your spending and stay on top of your account balances. You can choose the notification triggers that match your needs such as transactions exceeding the set amount.

Step 2: Keep tabs on your account.

One of the best things you can do to keep your money safe is to keep a close eye on your transaction activity. Use tools such as online banking or the credit unions mobile app to check in on your account regularly in the event of an unauthorized transaction. You'll be able to spot it quickly and report it to expedite getting your money back.

Step 3: Keep your cards safe.

Skimming capturing card information is on the rise at A.T.M.s and gas stations. Never use an A.T.M. or card swipe that looks like it has been tampered with or as indicated by loose or extra parts attached to the face of the machine. If your card is captured inside an A.T.M. or another device, call us immediately to report the incident. You may think your card was jammed by the device but many times it is retrieved by a criminal who staged the capture and may use it immediately. In either case, you will require a replacement card.

Step 4: Control your card.

Leverage card management tools such as mobile on or off features available through the credit union to avoid misuse. Also, never provide your PIN to anyone or write your pin on your card or a sticky note in your wallet or purse.

Debit cards can be an excellent way to control your spending, avoid debt, and sometimes even earn cashback while the team at NorthStar is always working behind the scenes to keep your money safe. It's important that you also stay vigilant to protect your card against misuse.
